Konrad Zuse (1910-1995)

Konrad Zuse graduated from the technical college of Berlin Charlottenburg in 1935.
He stared out working for the Henschel Flugzeugwerke (Henschel aircraft factory) as a design engineer but resigned a year later to start working on a computer. He start working on his first prototype the V1 in his parents apartment. He was helped by his friend Helmut Schreyer.

The V1 (Z1)

Konrad Zuse finished the V1 in 1936 it weighed 1000 kg which had around 20000 parts. After WWII Konrad Zuse decided to change the V1-V4 to the Z1-Z4 because of the V1-V4 military rockets. The Z1 became the first programmable computer using binary floating point numbers and a binary switching system. The Z1 was made of thin metal sheets that Konrad and his friends cut using a jigsaw. There was only one thing that required electricity and it was an electrical engine that had a power of 1KW it powered a clock that did one cycle per second.

The Z1's Programs

The programs were run by the punch tape using a 8bit code.
It was programmed with eight instructions they were as followed.
1. Two instructions for input/output:
•Lu—to call the input device for decimal numbers
•Ld—to call the output device for decimal numbers
2. Two instructions for reading/writing from/to memory:
•Pr z—read the contents of the memory cell z into Registers R1 or R2
•Ps z—write the contents of Register R1 to the memory cell z
3. Four arithmetical instructions:
•Ls1—add the two floating-point numbers in the Registers R1 and R2
•Ls2—subtract the two floating-point numbers in the Registers R1 and R2
•Lm—multiply the two floating-point numbers in the Registers R1 and R2
•Li—divide the two floating point numbers in the Registers R1 and R2

Why did Konrad Zuse change the V1 to the Z1
A) Helmut did not like the name V1 B) People would not buy the V1 C) The military rocket V1 D) The V1 blow up

About how many parts are in the Z1
A) 7 B) 20000 C) 1000 D) 1097
